چکیده

The communication between control units and field devices in industrial environments is based on so-called fieldbus technologies networks optimized for the realtime transmission of highly sensitive data for control and monitoring purposes. As a strong need for wireless fieldbus systems arose, the applicability of available wireless standards has been examined. Some specialized wireless systems are arising on the market but so far, no appropriate general solution based on a common standard could be found. In this project, the upcoming standard IEEE 802.11e is analyzed and its applicability tested by means of simulations in the network simulator ns-2. Several traffic scenarios, typical for communications in the automation industry are considered. In order to enhance the achievable performance in an error-prone environment, different algorithms and retransmission procedures are proposed. The obtained results show that, even though IEEE 802.11e is not optimized for industrial applications, it has a potential for realtime applications with some jitter and error margins.

Study of Quality of Service by using 802.11e

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are one of the fastest growing wireless access technologies. The IEEE 802.11 Standard doesn’t support any QoS mechanisms. IEEE 802.11 MAC layer supports two basic access mechanisms, DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). The EDCA mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides QoS support through service differentiatio...

Mobility and QoS of 802.11 and 802.11e wireless LAN standards

Quality of service is a key problem in wireless environments where bandwidth is scarce and channel conditions are time varying and sometimes implies highly packet losses. IEEE 802.11b/g/a wireless LAN are the most widely used WLAN standards today, and the IEEE 802.11e quality of service enhancement standard exists and introduces quality of service support for multimedia applications. This paper...

IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN for Quality of Service

In this paper, a comprehensive overview of the new features of an upcoming new standard IEEE 802.11e to support Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is presented. We address Medium Access Control (MAC) enhancements found in the current 802.11e draft specification by emphasizing the differences from the legacy 802.11 standard. New mechanisms for QoS support, namely En...
